By Robert W. Warren, M.D.
I vaguely remember summers as lazy times away from school and off at camp. This summer at Texas Children's has been extremely busy, with multiple initiatives now past us and many more well under way.
-
In this issue of Progress notes, Dr. Feigin writes about, and welcomes, the more than 100 new members of the medical staff and, of course, July brought new fellows and residents, as well.
-
The hospital's strategic planning initiative continues, with a report due to the
board in September.
-
The Health Care Information System selection effort is in full swing, with second visits by our two vendor finalists, Epic and Cerner, scheduled for July 21/22 and August 9/10, respectively. More demonstrations of these integrated inpatient/outpatient electronic medical records are planned, and Dr. Feigin and I hope that many of you will participate in these evaluations.
Medical and hospital staffs have been busy doing other truly extraordinary things. In this issue, for example, Dr. Steve Abrams writes about his team's recent trip to tsunami-damaged Sri Lanka to help with health care system recovery. The 11-member Texas Children’s team donated thousands of dollars worth of supplies and equipment and, even more importantly, shared much-needed knowledge and training with hospitals in Galle, Colombo and Kandy. Since their return, various team members have described the mission as “a phenomenal experience.”
Dr. Mark Kline and his group are extending the international network of AIDS clinics for children with the launch of a groundbreaking program in Africa. The $40 million project with Bristol-Myers Squibb entails the formation of a pediatric AIDS physician corps and the construction of four new clinical centers of excellence in Africa.
These are truly uplifting stories of caring for others.
Meanwhile, here at home, at the August 9 medical staff meeting, we celebrated the
incredible years and years of commitment of 76 physicians who have served our community's children as members of the Texas Children’s medical staff for an inspiring 25 years and more. I particularly want to offer my congratulations to Drs. Frank Hill, Leighton Hill, Allen Kline and Nicholas Tengg, who have been members of the staff for 45 years.
Robert W. Warren, M.D., is the 2005 president of the medical staff; medical director, Rheumatology Service; medical director, Information Services; and assistant medical director, Ambulatory
Services at Texas Children’s. He also is associate professor, Department of Pediatrics, at Baylor College of Medicine.
