Three themes will drive 2005

By Robert W. Warren, M.D.
As I begin my year as president of the medical staff, I have a
number of priorities. First, the Joint Commission review is upon
us; reviewers will spend the week of Feb. 14 in our midst. It’s
important that we, as members of the medical staff, meet our
obligations in the processes of care and be responsive to the
reviewers. Dr. Ralph Feigin’s article in this edition of
Progress notes addresses the JCAHO review and the role of
the medical staff.
Second, following Dr. Jeffrey Starke’s stated goal in the first
edition of Progress notes, I want to be sure this year
that your access to and understanding of resources available to
the medical staff is optimal. E-mail and Web access, and
particularly this bimonthly newsletter, will be our primary way
of communicating with you, as well as the quarterly medical
staff meetings on Feb. 8, May 10, Aug. 9 and Nov. 8. Please feel
free to contact Dr. Feigin
as physician-in-chief, as well as this year’s medical staff
officers and committee chairs. Click here for the
complete list of these individuals (and their e-mail addresses). As a group, you expressed interest in
reports on medical staff committee activities. While committee
minutes are available to you from Medical Staff Services, they
are typically long and detailed. Therefore, beginning with the
next issue, we will publish “news” from committees of high and
general interest, and I ask committee chairs to contribute as
appropriate. As you are aware, Dr. Feigin also gives this type
of summary at the quarterly staff meetings.
Tap into information and resources
I particularly want each of you to be aware of
resources
available through the Medical Staff Services office and Director Debbie
Marré. Debbie’s article in this edition of Progress
notes (re)introduces those resources to you. In addition,
Debbie and I plan to create an online Texas Children’s Hospital
Medical Staff Manual this year, which will provide more detailed
and continually updated information.
This issue also begins a series of articles highlighting
bench-to-bedside research at
Texas Children's with Dr. Jeff Towbin's article on translational research
in treating cardiomyopathy.
Third, as we move through the year, I plan to concentrate on
three themes. Patient safety and quality of care must always
guide our work. The other two themes also reflect my personal
commitments over the years here at Texas Children’s. I will
speak briefly about family centered care at the February medical
staff meeting and write more about that in the next newsletter.
And finally, we will be defining and beginning the
implementation of a clinical information strategic vision this
year. We look forward to timely access to complete clinical
information and decision support, as well as the information
technology and communication tools to speed appropriate patient
care, teaching and research.
If I can personally be of help to you in the coming year, please
do not hesitate to call me at 832-824-3834 or contact me by
e-mail at rwwarren@texaschildrenshospital.org.
Robert W. Warren, M.D., is the 2005 president of the medical
