Keeping the lines of communication open

By Jeffrey R. Starke, M.D.

Welcome to the first edition of Progress notes, the newsletter for the Texas Children’s Hospital medical staff. This publication has been a long time coming, but it will now be a regular publication. This will be the only edition to appear in print form. All subsequent editions will be located on a dedicated Web page to allow for more widespread and timely dissemination of important information. You will receive e-mail alerts when new editions or addenda become available so you can keep abreast of developments at Texas Children’s.

Several months ago, the hospital’s Marketing department surveyed members of the medical staff about whether they wanted a newsletter and, if so, what the content should be. The response was heavy and overwhelmingly positive in support of a regular newsletter that caters to the needs of the medical staff. This is your newsletter, and we want the content to reflect your needs and goals. You are always welcome to contact the medical staff president or Cindy Shanley, newsletter editor, to suggest ideas or send information you think should be included in upcoming issues.

In the survey, we asked what you thought should be included in a newsletter. Your responses indicated a desire for reports on medical staff committee activities, as well as information about new medical staff members, new Texas Children’s programs and – the focus of this first issue – patient safety. Many patient safety initiatives have been started by Texas Children’s in the past two years, but the medical staff has received little specific information about them. Through this newsletter, we aim to improve on that because it is critical that our physicians be intimately involved in the hospital’s efforts to provide the safest possible environment while continuing to be leaders in pediatric medical and surgical innovation.

The pace of medical innovation is accelerating quickly, and the need for and capabilities of information technology have changed dramatically in the past few years. Mechanisms to alert and educate staff members about the increasingly complex environment of the Texas Children’s IDS are more important than ever. We hope this newsletter will be a first step toward improved communications for and between members of the medical staff. Let us know how we can make it better for you.

Jeffrey R. Starke, M.D., is the 2004 president of the Medical Staff and director of Infection Control at Texas Children’s and professor and vice chairman of Pediatrics at Baylor College of Medicine.
