memoriam
F. James Boland
F. James Boland, M.D., a local pioneer in caring for abused
children and a beloved physician at Texas Children's Hospital,
died of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (Lou Gehrig’s disease) on
Jan. 27, 2005. He was 61.
He was an outstanding and committed physician who will be deeply
missed by all of us at Texas Children's Hospital.
Dr. Boland served as chairman of the Bioethics Committee at
Texas Children's Hospital from 1992 to 2001 and chairman of the
Child Protection Committee from its inception in 1976 to 2002.
He developed the child protection team at Texas Children's – a
group incorporating physicians, nurses, social workers and
public agencies dedicated to the protection of children who are
victims of abuse – one of the first such groups in Houston.
He also directed the work of the Bioethics Committee with great
sensitivity and judgment during a challenging time for the
committee, while at the same time earning the deep respect of
his colleagues. Texas Children’s medical futility policy was
adopted during his tenure.
Dr. Boland headed pediatrics at Kelsey-Seybold clinics and
helped increase the clinic’s neighborhood units in the Houston
area. In recognition of his services to the organization’s
pediatric program, Dr. Boland was named a Fellow of the
Kelsey-Seybold Clinic in 2002, a rarely bestowed honor.
A graduate of the University of Notre Dame, Boland earned his
medical degree in 1969 from Loyola University Chicago Strich
School of Medicine. He completed his residency in pediatrics at
Butterworth Hospital at Michigan State University in East
Lansing.
