Medical staff updates on new projects and policies
that are in the pipeline

Medical Records
The Harris County Medical Society is working with area hospitals to ensure access to medical records necessary for continuity of patient care is not impeded by misinterpretation of HIPAA regulations.

Infections Control
The 2004 Antibiogram report is now available on the Texas Children’s Hospital Intranet.

Operating Room
A new policy is under development that will state that parents/close relatives should not be present in the operating room during surgical procedures.

Ambulatory
There has been a 7.07 percent increase in volume compared to year to date, fiscal year 2004.

A team has been established to evaluate the process for maintaining physician and patient demographics. This team is working to review multiple systems and create a process to update information across systems.

A project is being developed to assist in transitioning patients into the adult health care setting. Dr. Cynthia Peacock of Baylor College of Medicine has just recently started a transitional medicine clinic for patients with chronic childhood illness who are now 18 to 30 years of age.

There are three new clinic chiefs:
Carol Redel, M.D. – Feeding Disorders Clinic

Anthony Olive, M.D. – GI, Hepatology & Nutrition Clinic

Timothy Lotze, M.D. – Muscular Dystrophy Clinic & Multiple Sclerosis Clinic

Department of Medicine
A pilot study was initiated on 7 Tower in October 2004 to look at opportunities to reduce the length of stay for asthma patients. The protocol was shown to reduce the LOS significantly and an implementation plan discussed. Changes include education, follow-up with Social Services to assure that patients are linked with primary care physicians and, the most significant change, self-weaning. The protocol involves a team approach to the delivery of care to these patients. Additional information will be provided when the plan is implemented.
