It is hard to believe that we have put the New Year’s party hats
away, celebrated Valentine’s Day, recovered from spring break,
embraced the craziness of college basketball mania called March
Madness…and that April is already here. Just as we have been
busy in our daily schedules, much continues to happen at Texas
Children’s. Physician-in-Chief
Dr. Ralph Feigin’s column touches on
many of these activities, as do the other articles in this issue
of Progress Notes. The following are a few that merit
extra attention.
The Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare
Organizations
(JCAHO)
will be making an unannounced one-day survey of the ambulatory
mental health services. Please remember that such surveys are no
longer announced; thus, our hospital policies and procedures, as
well as our overall preparedness, are of daily importance as
we conduct our duties. The Texas Children’s staff has been
diligently focused on this approach for several years and
continues to receive the highest approval for the surveys. We
expect this to be the case in this survey as well.
Anesthesia awareness
is not an issue that we as pediatricians deal with regularly in
our practice, but as we can see by Drs. Stayer and Andropoulos’
article, the experience may not be as unusual as we might think
and may pose some disturbing experiences to our patients. The
information they provide gives us an opportunity to help
our patients, and hopefully assist our colleagues in
Anesthesiology in determining the prevalence of this
post-anesthesia event, as well as possibly develop a prevention
strategy.
Also of
great interest in this edition of Progress Notes is Dr.
Warren’s article on
HIPAA
and Dr. Abrams'
bench to
bedside article on osteoporosis.
Please
enjoy this newsletter, and do not hesitate to call Dr. Kagan or myself regarding any suggestions to continue to make
this newsletter a practical source of information to you.
