From the medical staff president

New year will build on previous momentum

By Joseph A. Garcia-Prats

By Joseph A. Garcia-Prats, M.D.

The new year brings new hope of individual practices and for our families. Likewise, the new year ushers in new challenges for our medical community. I feel fortunate to serve as president of this outstanding medical staff. When I was first approached to accept the nomination, then-president Dr. Jeff Starke remarked how impressed he was by the tremendous amount of time spent in Texas Children’s committee work by our medical staff and the remarkable leadership by Dr. Ralph Feigin and Mark Wallace. The decision for me to accept the nomination became an easy one, especially in light of all that Texas Children’s Hospital and the pediatric medical staff has done for my family over the years. It was my opportunity to give back in a small way. I must admit there is some anxiety on my part in following in the footsteps of Drs. Jeff Starke and Bob Warren. I now have a great sense of empathy for the quarterback at UT following Vince Young. I will never be that big or that fast – however, I look forward to the duties, challenges and opportunities of this 2006 presidency and ask for everyone’s support.

There will be several items from 2005 that I will continue to bring to the medical staff’s attention this year. One of these will be the selection and implementation of the electronic medical record system, which will greatly impact all areas of Texas Children’s. We all look forward to its stepwise rollout over the next several years. Another focus of mine will be the ongoing strategies to address safety issues. I intend to keep these efforts highlighted throughout the year and hope this will stimulate all of us to cooperate and support these efforts.

Lastly, I will continue to develop our electronic newsletter, Progress Notes, as a source of information for our medical staff with a goal that it will be regularly accessed by all of us. In this same vein, please work with me to continue to improve communication and involvement of all of our medical staff in the activities of Texas Children’s Hospital. I look forward to a great year.

Joseph A. Garcia-Prats, M.D., is the 2006 president of the medical staff and a neonatologist at Texas Children’s. He also is a professor of pediatrics and a professor of medical ethics at Baylor College of Medicine.
