2005 has been a great year

By Robert W. Warren, M.D.
2005 has been a great year for Texas
Children’s Hospital. The year has seen a broad and deep
strategic planning effort, tremendous progress in planning for a
new Health Care Information System (HCIS), and a couple of
hurricanes and great lessons in disaster preparedness and
response. Although it seems now like it happened about 25 years
ago, we had a terrific Joint Commission survey back in February.
We have sharpened our focus on patient safety and quality, and
also on family-centered care. Begun by Dr. Jeff Starke in 2004,
our online medical staff newsletter is now recognized
nationally. Deborah Marre, her staff and I have almost finished the
Medical Staff Manual, which will soon be available online.

Progress Notes is the winner of a 2005
Silver Quill - Award of Merit from the International Association
of Business Com-municators (IABC), Southern Region.
Don’t miss the
special feature in this issue where Physician-in-Chief Dr. Ralph Feigin discusses
the future of child health through research
in a reprint of his article for the Journal of American
Medicine.
Also in this issue, Chief Safety Officer Joan Shook talks about
the path to becoming a high-reliability organization with active
safety reporting and proactive risk assessment. Dr. Peter
Hiatt’s article on gene therapy demonstrates the important research
we’re doing on cystic fibrosis. You’ll also want to read about Texas
Children’s pet therapy program, which is having a positive
impact after just one year.

All of this has been possible because of the superb leadership
of Dr. Feigin and Mr. Wallace, and the work of hundreds of
members of the medical staff caring for children, along with
their parents, nurses, therapists and many, many other Texas
Children’s employees. But that's not all you've committed to
leadership this year. With 1,670 members of the medical staff,
492 are in active status, and of those, 227 (56 percent) serve
on 25 medical staff committees – that's truly extraordinary.
I thank you all for your support and partnership during this
past year, and particularly Dr. Feigin, Mr. Wallace, and Drs.
Jeff Starke and Joe Garcia-Prats. And also sincere thanks to
Deborah Marre, Margaret Foreman and their staff in Medical Staff
Services, who support us so well.
2006 promises new challenges and opportunities. Let's go forward
with vision, commitment and synergy.
Have a wonderful holiday season. |
