Texas Children’s news for the medical staff

Surgery
The Department of Surgery has begun a Pediatric Surgery Grand Rounds series to be held the first Friday of every month at 7 a.m. in the Texas Children’s Hospital Auditorium.

The first presentation was given by Dr. Jed Nuchtern, who spoke about recent developments in neuroblastoma research. Nuchtern is associate professor of Surgery, Division of Pediatric Surgery, at Baylor College of Medicine and a member of the Texas Children's medical staff with privileges in Pediatric Surgery.

This educational series is sponsored by Baylor College of Medicine, which designates this activity for one hour of category 1 CME credit.

Additional information will be provided as it becomes available.

New access to call schedules
A new Web-based system has been instituted that will allow individuals easy access to call schedules and the ability to page through the Texas Children’s paging system with either direct page or text messaging. You can access the system through the intranet Physicians Resource Page, the intranet Favorites button, or the Texas Children’s applications.

Quality council
A new National Patient Safety Goal has added increased focus to effective communication during “hand off” of patients from one caregiver to another. The goal is to implement a standardized approach to the “hand off” communications, including an opportunity to ask and respond to questions.

Medical staff bylaws
Changes to the medical staff bylaws that were approved by the medical staff at the August Quarterly Medical Staff Meeting have been approved by the Board of Trustees and can now be accessed through the Physician Resource Center intranet page.

Bioethics Education Subcommittee receives award
Texas Children’s Bioethics Education Subcommittee received recognition for Best Multidisciplinary Work for its paper “E-Ethics and Education - Developing a Hospital-wide Ethics Toolkit.” The paper was presented by Barbara Montagnino, R.N., assisted by Ernest Frugé, Ph.D., Myrtle Williams, vice president and R.N., and Kathy Jordan, R.N. The presentation was made at a symposium sponsored by the Cleveland Clinic Children's Hospital and Department of Bioethics titled “Pediatric Ethics: Setting an Agenda for the Future.” The symposium was attended by more than 250 bioethicists, physicians, pediatric intensivists, nurses and social workers.

Moderate sedation criteria change
On the recommendation of the Sedation Oversight Committee and the Credentials Committee, the criteria for moderate sedation privileges have changed. Please note that at the time of your next reappointment, you will be required to achieve a score of 90 percent or better on the Texas Children’s Hospital online sedation course in addition to providing documentation of current certification in APLS, PALS, ACLS or BLS.
