By Joseph A. Garcia-Prats, M.D.
We anxiously await the cooler weather of fall, which usually
comes when October arrives, knowing that “cooler” means highs in
the low 80s. Cooler temperatures mean a cooler Gulf of Mexico,
and hopefully a less likely chance of spawning a powerful
hurricane for our already anxious and recovering Gulf Coast
neighbors in eastern Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi and Georgia.
Our air conditioners could use a break and that would be a great
relief to us, especially when we open our monthly electric
bills. Oh, the prospect of cooler days to come brings a vision
of open windows and no mosquitoes!
Our October issue of
Progress Notes also focuses on several “cool” expansion
initiatives and research occurring at Texas Children’s Hospital.
Dr.
Feigin’s article provides us with exciting news about the
NIH’s awards rankings for 2005 and some very timely updates on
Texas Children’s expansion efforts. Allow me to echo the
excitement of the recent announcements by Dr. Feigin and Mr.
Wallace regarding the development of the perinatal center and neurodevelopmental
research center, along with the new addition
to the Feigin Center that will become a prominent part of our
medical center skyline.
Let me remind
everyone that these structures put into brick and mortar the
many aspects of the vision that Dr. Feigin so eloquently
delineated in his September 2005 JAMA article, “Prospects for the Future of Child Health
through Research.”
It is gratifying to
see the work of two very insightful leaders—Dr. Feigin and Mr.
Wallace—as they work diligently to bring about what it will take
to improve the health of our children both in this decade and in
the future. Such endeavors will undoubtedly generate questions
about the unknown, but there is also excitement that we on the
medical staff can be part of the solutions as Texas Children’s
uses Dr. Feigin’s vision as the roadmap to the future for
improving children’s health.
This issue’s
bench-to-bedside article by Dr. McClain offers
interesting insight into the latest in research into Langerhans
cell histiocytosis (LCH). As Dr. McClain points out, the cause
of LCH is still unknown, but a few glimmers of light on the
pathophysiology are emerging. You’ll want to read about some of
the progress that’s being made and the accompanying article
about Dr. McClain’s 3,540-mile cross-country
bike
ride to raise awareness and money about this disease. Dr.
McClain’s dedication to the fight against this rare and
sometimes fatal blood disorder is inspiring. I was captivated by
his personal account of his coast-to-coast adventure and know
that you will feel the same as you read it.
Lastly, it is with
great pride that I announce that Progress Notes snagged
an Award of Merit in the annual
Bronze Quill
competition held by the Houston chapter of the International
Association of Business Communicators (IABC). This is the second
award for our newsletter and as you read about this year’s
achievement, I hope you’ll be as impressed as I am by the
collaboration between Marketing, the medical staff and other
hospital contributors. Special recognition goes to the many
authors who take time out of their already busy schedules to
write articles for the newsletter so that we can keep each other
informed about the great work that’s being done at Texas
Children’s. Congratulations! |
Joseph A. Garcia-Prats, M.D., is the 2006 president of the medical staff and a neonatologist at Texas Children’s. He also is a professor of pediatrics and a professor of medical ethics at Baylor College of Medicine.
