2005 awards and honors

Excellence in Clinical Scholarship Award
Texas Children's Center for Clinical Research received The Society of Pediatric Nurses Excellence in Clinical Scholarship Award for demonstrating the consistent application of scholarship in clinical practice. The center supports Texas Children’s Nursing department by performing literature reviews to ensure its policies are evidence-based.

Houston Chronicle 2005 Salute to Nurses
Four outstanding Texas Children’s registered nurses (RNs) have been named among the 10 best nurses in the Houston area by the Houston Chronicle. Patients, patient families and peers nominate the nurses for the award. The nurses honored are Darylin Adams, General Clinical Research Center; Tammy Davenport, Neonatal Intensive Care unit; Kimbereley Edwards, General Medicine/Transplant; and MaryAnn Kiss, Progressive Care unit. Excellence in Clinical Practice Award
The Clinical Practice Council, compromised of nurses from units within Texas Children's who identify and collaborate on practice issues to improve patient-care outcomes, received The Society of Pediatric Nurses Excellence in Clinical Practice Award for making a significant contribution to the care of children and families.

K23 Research Award
Eufemia Jacob, Ph.D., a post-doctoral nursing fellow in Texas Children's Cancer Center® received a K23 Research Award from the National Institutes of Health/National Institute of Nursing Research. This highly competitive award provides funding for her three year study, "Response to Morphine in Children with Sickle Cell Anemia."

Magnet nursing recognition
In January 2003, Texas Children's Hospital received national Magnet Recognition, one of the highest honors in nursing. The hospital is re-evaluated every four years to ensure quality. Sixty-seven hospitals have achieved Magnet status nationwide, and only three are freestanding children's hospitals.

Texas Children's employs more than 1,000 nurses in more than 42 pediatric subspecialties, including neonatology, cardiology, surgery and cancer.

The Magnet designation is administrated by the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC), the largest nursing accrediting and credentialing organization in the United States.
