The Texas Children's Asthma Center assists referring physicians in treating children whose asthma is either difficult to diagnose or to manage. The center evaluates patients for factors that make asthma hard to control, then develops a treatment plan for each patient, which is reviewed by referring physicians. The treatment plan includes the latest recommendations for pharmacologic control and environmental management and provides families with an extensive education program and materials.

The asthma center also helps families learn more about what may be causing or triggering asthma in their child and what they may do to control the asthma. The team works together with the family and referring physician to develop a treatment plan to prevent chronic asthma symptoms and to deal with acute asthma episodes. The Clinic team provides ongoing education about asthma during each visit. Most patients referred to this clinic finish the program in two to four visits and are then referred back to their primary physicians for ongoing asthma care.

Children with difficult to control asthma may be followed for ongoing care if requested.
