If a problem is detected before birth
The Texas Children's Fetal Center is one of just four centers in the United States that offers the full spectrum of fetal therapies to diagnose, treat and follow all types of fetal abnormalities.

As the nation’s first and largest center for the care of newborns, Texas Children’s Newborn Center is known worldwide for excellence in providing specialized care for infants born prematurely or with complications.

The center's multi-disciplinary team comprises physicians, including neonatologists who are faculty at the world-renowned Baylor College of Medicine, nurse practitioners and allied health professionals.

At Texas Children’s Newborn Center, babies receive individualized treatment and the best possible care for a variety of conditions. Because parental presence and participation is so important to an infant’s progress, the center involves the family in the baby’s health care from the beginning.

Caring for tiny lives
According to national statistics from the March of Dimes, one out of nine expectant mothers do not carry to full term (at least 37 weeks). Every two minutes a low birth weight baby is born in the United States.

Low birth weight babies face many challenges. Texas Children’s Newborn Center provides the support, care and technology to infants born with lungs so tiny they need the help of machines to breathe. For these small patients, Texas Children’s uses the latest advances in neonatal respiratory care. Newborns with damaged or underdeveloped hearts or other organs that require surgery benefit from our highly skilled surgical team. Certain surgeries are done at the bedside of these newborns, providing more positive outcomes.

The center cares for many of the low birth weight babies born at nearby Houston-area hospitals. Others are transferred to Texas Children’s from local, state, national and even international facilities.

Texas Children’s Newborn Center provides specialized care to low birth-weight babies, including:

Ongoing care
After going home from the hospital, babies born prematurely, high-risk newborns or babies with complex medical problems may receive follow-up care at Texas Children’s Neonatology Graduate Clinic. The clinic provides care for all children, whether they began life in Texas Children's Newborn Center or another nursery.
