Parents are an integral part of
the DIR intervention team. Children with
special needs have a profound, ongoing reliance on their
parents as beloved guardians and protectors, as mediators
of their environment and as advocates. The Bridges
professional team works with parents to find meaning and
satisfaction within the parent-child relationship. To
achieve that end, therapists work together with parents as
partners and attempt to support parents as they help their
children build foundations in mutual attention, engagement
and two-way communication. The professionals at Bridges
seek to develop supportive and collaborative relationships
with parents to achieve the goals they have for their
children. Parents are asked to share information related
to their child’s interests and sensitivities, and Bridges
professionals share knowledge of therapeutic activities
and strategies that may assist a child to develop
emotionally, physically and cognitively.
Due to
this goal to support the relationship between a parent and his or
her child, parent participation at Bridges is required. Parents are
asked to participate one day weekly, at a minimum, in his or her
child’s therapeutic program at Bridges. Active participation of both
parents will ensure that your child’s ability to relate and
communicate with you is primary and that you are able to carry
through the home program in a seamless manner.
