For members of the Texas Children's Hospital medical staff

From the medical staff president

As the weather heats up, we offer a hearty welcome to the new fellows and residents

Dr. Arnold G. Kagan

By Arnold G. Kagan, M.D.

Well, we dodged the first couple of storms of the season, but temperatures of 100 degrees are sufficiently taxing and require at least some caution when spending time outside – even when simply moving from one place to another. So please be careful of excessive exposure and drink a lot – and high school football players, be careful of “two-a-day” practices. It is our responsibility to advise our patients on the “hazards of the heat.”

Echoing Dr. Feigin’s sentiments in this issue of Progress Notes, we offer good luck to all the graduates of the Baylor Pediatric Training Program. I know you will do well – whether general pediatrics or your chosen fields of fellowship study. And hopefully you will look back and realize what a wonderful training you received at Texas Children’s and Baylor College of Medicine. We hope you continue your association with us for many years to come.

To the new residents and fellows: a happy welcome. I want you to know that this is Texas, and bigger is better! I say this as one who came from South Africa and trained at Texas Children’s and Baylor. In this day and age of communication, whether e-mail, text messaging or instant messaging, I want to emphasize that there are many situations where a short phone call and discussion can help resolve complex issues. Never hesitate to use the phone if you feel it is necessary, independent of the time of day or night. You will not criticized for making an extra phone call, but you may be criticized for not making a necessary phone call. Err on the side of prudence and caution.

Also in this issue of Progress Notes, you’ll find an important article about hand hygiene. To paraphrase Dr. Jeff Starke’s article, I say – without fear of contradiction – wash your hands all the time!

It's wonderful to learn of "good news" for children with cancer.  As Dr. Dreyer explains, cancer remains the top cause of non-accidental death in children, but there through partnerships with other institutions and the testing of innovative therapies, Texas Children's is improving outcomes for these kids and their families.

I note with interest the development of a CME program at Texas Children’s. I know it will grow over time, and I am sure Dr. Stuart Abramson will take suggestions for future topics from interested participants.

Please feel free to contact me by e-mail or by calling me at 281-484-9332 if I can be of assistance.

Arnold G. Kagan is the 2007 president of the medical staff and a clinical associate professor of Pediatrics with his own private practice.
