From the physician-in-chief

Physician excellence recognized through prestigious awards

Dr. Ralph D. Feigin

By Ralph D. Feigin, M.D.

The annual meeting of the Pediatric Academic Societies, which includes the American Pediatric Society, the Society for Pediatric Research and the Ambulatory Pediatric Association, was held in Toronto, Canada, May 3-8, 2007. The meeting was held in conjunction with meetings of the Lawson Wilkins Endocrine Society, the Pediatric Infectious Diseases Society, the Pediatric Academic Nephrology Society, the Asian Pediatric Association and the Japanese Pediatric Association.

The meeting is a place where all recent advances in pediatric research can be presented, and individuals from throughout the United States, Canada and other parts of the world present their best research. The Texas Children's Hospital staff, through its Department of Pediatrics, made more than 200 presentations, either orally or in poster format, at the meeting.

A number of awards are made at this meeting, including the John Howland Award, which is the highest and most prestigious award given by the American Pediatric Society for lifetime accomplishments that have contributed to the advance of pediatrics. I was privileged to be the recipient of this award for 2007. I personally view this award as a reflection of the excellence achieved by the Department of Pediatrics of Baylor College of Medicine and by all of the members of the staff of the Texas Children's Hospital. I want to thank Dr. Gail Demmler for her overly generous introduction, and I wish to also thank the many members of the staff of Texas Children's Hospital who attended the award ceremony, as well as the dinner that evening.

A clean sweep
I personally want to take this opportunity to congratulate Dr. Carol Baker, who received the Distinguished Physician Award from the Pediatric Infectious Diseases Society, and Dr. Sheldon Kaplan, who received the Distinguished Service Award from the Pediatric Infectious Diseases Society. This represented a clean sweep of these Society awards for the faculty of the Department of Pediatrics and members of the staff of Texas Children's Hospital.

I also have noted that at the upcoming meeting of the International Pediatric Association that two members of our staff have been selected to make plenary session invited presentations at this meeting. They are Dr. Jeffrey Starke, who will speak about tuberculosis, and Dr. Mark Kline, who will speak about acquired immunodeficiency syndrome and the care of pediatric patients with this disease in various parts of the world.

All of us should take great pride in the recognition received by these individuals, which reflects exceedingly well on this institution.

Ralph D. Feigin, M.D., is physician-in-chief at Texas Children's Hospital and professor and chairman of the Department of Pediatrics at Baylor College of Medicine.
