Looking ahead to a year of continued advancements

Dr. Arnold G. Kagan

I continue to be impressed by the complexity of running an institution like Texas Children's and how it requires contributions from people from all
walks of life...

By Arnold G. Kagan, M.D.

As we start the year 2007, I want to say how pleased and privileged I am to represent the medical staff at Texas Children's. First, allow me to thank Joseph Garcia-Prats, M.D., last year's medical staff president, for helping to introduce me to my responsibilities as president and for setting such a wonderful example. Joe was one of my first attendings when I started my residency at Jefferson Davis Hospital in July 1977. His commitment to delivering superb health care and other services remains uncompromised.

Dr. Feigin, our physician-in-chief, started as head of the Department of Pediatrics at the same time I began my residency. His career has advanced a trifle more than mine, but he has always been available to help and contribute as long as the end point was delivery of superb health care to children, both in Houston and worldwide.

My relationships with both of these colleagues remind me of the song “The Circle of Life” by Elton John from the musical “The Lion King.”

Texas Children's is remarkable
I continue to be impressed by the complexity of running an institution like Texas Children's and how it requires contributions from people from all walks of life, including professional, administrative, technical support personnel, as well as many volunteers.

My hope for the year 2007 is that Texas Children's continues to thrive at the primary, secondary and tertiary level of care as evidenced by the current articles on the discovery of the genetics of Rett syndrome and our Blue Bird Circle Rett Center where these patients are taken care of. Reading these articles will give you a sense of the remarkable strides being made both in the research lab and at the bedside. Our Rett Center is one of three centers in the United States that specialize in the diagnosis and care of girls and women with Rett syndrome.

Speaking of remarkable, Dr. Ralph Feigin's article offers a glimpse at Texas Children's outstanding performance in a recent unannounced mock survey conducted by the Joint Commission Resources group. He also has some very exciting information about developments in our Vision 2010 initiative that relate to the future Maternity Center.

Warm wishes for a great year
Hopefully, Mother Nature will remain calm and we will continue to enhance the lives of children everywhere. Please feel free to contact me by calling my office at 281-484-9332 or by e-mail at akagk@aol.com if I can be of any assistance.

Arnold G. Kagan is the 2007 president of the medical staff and a clinical associate professor of Pediatrics with his own private practice.
