For members of the Texas Children's Hospital medical staff

From the medical staff president

Congratulations to the new medical staff president and president-elect

Dr. Arnold G. Kagan

By Arnold G. Kagan, M.D.

With the new year comes new leadership for the medical staff. As my tenure of president of the medical staff comes to an end, I wish to thank Dr. Feigin and Mr. Wallace for all their help and advice. And, I want to offer a very special thank you to all the Medical Staff Services personnel, especially Deborah Marre and Margaret Foreman, who have made this volunteer position very manageable and pleasant.

To the incoming president Dr. ZoAnn Dreyer and president-elect Dr. Michael Speer, my first attending at Jefferson Davis Hospital: Congratulations! I know you both will do an excellent job representing the medical staff here at Texas Children’s Hospital.

I would also like to welcome all the new members of the medical staff. It is a privilege to have you here at Texas Children's, and we look forward to your ongoing contributions for many years to come.

It’s hard to believe hurricane season has ended and cold – or at least cooler – weather has arrived in Texas. We’ve been fortunate to dodge any major weather incidents. But, referring to the article from the AAP on preparation for pandemic influenza, we must always be vigilant and prepared – easy to say, but not so easy to achieve.

Along with Dr. Feigin, I am pleased to note all the agreements between Baylor College of Medicine and Texas Children’s Hospital are complete. Patient care continues to be our priority, but this can only be achieved when business issues are managed correctly and efficiently.

Dr. Lee’s article on brittle bone disease is excellent. As a primary-care physician, I believe in the adage is "common things occur commonly," but we always need to be aware of the rare possibilities and seek consultation when necessary.

Have a wonderful holiday season and all the best to you and your family in 2008.

Please feel free to contact me by e-mail or by calling me at 281-484-9332 if I can be of assistance.

Arnold G. Kagan is the 2007 president of the medical staff and a clinical associate professor of Pediatrics with his own private practice.
