Texas Children’s partners with Mexican consulate
to open medical information center
To meet the growing health care needs of the Mexican community
in Houston, Texas Children’s Hospital, in collaboration with St.
Luke’s Episcopal Health System and with philanthropic support from Bank
of America, has partnered with the Consulate General of
Mexico-Houston to create the city’s first bilingual health care
information resource center.
Located within the Mexican Consulate, the medical information
center is expected to assist more than 5,000 people each year,
many of whom will be Mexican citizens living or traveling in
Southeast Texas, as well as persons of dual citizenship and
Americans seeking to do business or travel in Mexico.
The center will contain a library and online database of
health-related information, including vaccinations, nutrition,
the prevention and management of diabetes, qualifying health
providers in the region, and how to enroll in public and private
health insurance plans. Bilingual and specially trained
volunteers will manage the center and work with visitors to
ensure that they receive the proper information. Texas
Children’s Hospital will coordinate the operation and management
of the center.
The medical information center is located in the Mexican
Consulate at 4506 Caroline. The center is open Monday through
Friday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. To contact the center directly,
call 713-778-6105.
Texas Children's Hospital announces largest investment
and program expansion ever by a single pediatric organization
Texas Children’s will invest $1.5 billion over a four-year
period in initiatives to secure its role as a pre-eminent
pediatric institution and to anticipate the future of children’s
health regionally, nationally and internationally. This is the
largest expansion program ever by a children's hospital.
The planned initiatives, all of which are targeted for
completion by 2010, focus largely on research and accessibility,
two areas which the Texas Children's board and its leadership
believe are the keys to rapidly translating science into quality
clinical care for children, as well as making that quality care
accessible to all patients. Major capital projects include the
creation of a comprehensive neurological research institute
($215 million), the formation of a maternity center ($575
million), expansion of existing research facilities ($120
million) and the development of one of the largest pediatric
hospitals in a suburban setting ($220 million). Other dollars
($370 million) are earmarked for new equipment and information
systems to support quality improvement.
“This investment is not about buildings; it is about the
responsibility we as a leader in pediatrics have to accelerate
the translation of research from bench to beside,” said Mark
A. Wallace, chief executive officer of Texas Children’s Hospital.
“It is very obvious to our board, our medical staff and our
employees that there is a significant need in our backyard, in
our country and across the world for research and development in
key areas. Access to the highest quality pediatric care will
suffer without an ongoing commitment to cutting-edge research;
at Texas Children’s Hospital, we will not allow that to happen.”
Texas Children’s expands presence in Clear Lake
Doors opened in October to the new Texas Children’s Health
Centers® – Clear Lake site.
Located off Clear Lake City Boulevard near Interstate 45, the
11,250-square-foot building provides space for eight exam rooms,
two procedure rooms, nurses’ station, laboratory area, radiology
suite, casting and splinting room, two gyms for physical and
occupational therapy and a 40-person waiting room.
The design also accommodates a “virtual” physician’s office,
equipped with full workstations that can be used by physicians
with the eight specialty services offered at Clear Lake Health
Center.
Supporting the mission of Texas Children’s Hospital to provide
access to the finest possible pediatric patient care, the new,
larger Clear Lake Health Center will meet the demand of the
growing pediatric population in southeast Houston, Clear Lake,
Galveston and surrounding areas.
