Welcome new medical staff members

It is always a distinct
pleasure to welcome new members of the medical staff at Texas
Children’s Hospital. Since July 1, 84 individuals have been
appointed to the medical staff of Texas Children’s Hospital.
Virtually every medical service has added new members.
We are particularly pleased
to welcome a large number of individuals who have moved to
Houston to join the full-time, geographically based
physician groups who serve as members of the full-time faculty
at Baylor College of Medicine.
Dr. Virginia Moyer has
assumed the position of chief of the Academic Medicine Service
and as head of the Academic General Pediatrics Section of the
Department of Pediatrics at Baylor College of Medicine. Virginia
is an internationally renowned expert on evidence-based medicine
and outcomes research, a member of the Editorial Board of
Pediatrics, and has won numerous teaching awards in recognition
of her special teaching talents. She also will serve as
associate director of the Department of Ambulatory Services of
Texas Children’s Hospital.
Dr. Thomas Luerssen, a
nationally renowned pediatric neurosurgeon, has been appointed
chief of the Neurosurgery Service. He joins us from the
University of Indiana where he served as professor and chief of
Neurosurgery at the Riley Children’s Hospital.
Dr. Frank Ing joins us from
the University of California in San Diego. Frank is a nationally
renowned interventional pediatric cardiac specialist who has
been appointed director of the Cardiac Catheterization
Laboratories of Texas Children’s Hospital.
Dr. Eric Eichenwald,
formerly director of the Neonatal Intensive Care Units at
Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston, has joined us to serve
as associate director of our Neonatal Level 3 units.
We welcome all of the newly
appointed medical staff members to the Texas Children’s Hospital
family.

I would like at this time to thank Dr. Joseph Garcia-Prats for
his outstanding service as president of the medical staff for
the 2006-07 calendar year. Joe has been a member of our medical
staff for more than three decades and has made numerous
contributions over that period of time in his role as an
outstanding neonatologist and teacher. He has served on numerous
medical staff committees and, of course, during the past year
provided me with much support and wise counsel.
I also would like to
welcome Dr. Arnold Kagan, president-elect, as he assumes the
presidency of the medical staff beginning January 1, 2007.
Thank you all for your
continuing contributions in so many areas that are important to
the sustenance and progress of the hospital.
