The First of Its Kind

More than 1 billion people worldwide – 300 million of them children – suffer from mental or brain disorders.

Today, there is no single institution using multidisciplinary research to guide the study of pediatric cognitive development and neurological disorders. Tomorrow, there will be.

Jan and Dan Duncan Neurological Research Institute at Texas Children’s will be a new model of excellence: the first dedicated facility to use a multidisciplinary research approach to understand the unique issues of a child’s brain structure, development patterns and related diseases.

Building upon on-going work at Texas Children’s—already at the forefront of identifying genes that cause neurological disorders—the Neurological Research Institute will bring new insight to the search for the causes of pediatric disorders such as autism and Rett syndrome and adult disorders like Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s diseases.

Scheduled to open in 2010, the Neurological Research Institute will be the crossroads where more than 170 researchers (over 15 principal investigators and their teams) across disciplines collaborate to bring promising new treatments to those afflicted with neurological diseases.
