Understanding COBRA

When you’re reviewing your insurance options, make sure you’re getting the best possible plan. In general, a good plan will pay for some or all of the following, although you may have to pay for some percentage of each service.

  • Hospitalization

  • Medication

  • Outpatient medical visits (office visits)

  • Medical labs and procedures

  • Psychiatric services

  • Vision

  • Well-woman visits (female-specific regular checkups)

Make sure you know the specifics related to costs. For example, find out what the amounts are for:

  • Co-pay

  • Premium

  • Maximum expenditure for each area covered

If you already have a specialist whom you want to continue using, find out if the plan requires referrals to see specialists. Also, get in writing any exclusions or special cases you should know about.

After you choose a plan, make sure you carry your insurance card and some money source (cash, checks, credit card) to pay your co-pay or other out-of-pocket expenses for doctors' visits, labs or procedures.
