Dr. Machen’s research interest is in global health. She is working on a bubble C-PAP project to provide respiratory support in low resource settings. Students from Rice University have developed a low cost, durable device which is currently in the device testing phase. She and a colleague from Rice University have recently returned from Africa where they were establishing local partnerships to evaluate and implement the device. Teaching materials to facilitate care in settings with a high patient-to-nurse ratio are being developed. Goal: To provide state-of-the-art health care to children seeking emergent services.
