Because it can take time to get the necessary insurance approval and the complete medical record from referring institutions and physicians, Transplant Services at Texas Children’s Hospital encourages early referrals.

If Texas Children's Hospital is not listed on your child's health insurance, one of the financial counselor’s will work with the insurance company on behalf of your child and family. In many cases, we have been successful in having the program added as an approved provider even from out-of-state Medicaid programs.

For new patient referrals (those outside of Texas Children's Hospital), we encourage your child's physician or referring center to have all pertinent medical records faxed to Transplant Services in lieu of and sometimes in addition to express or next day mail. A patient can self refer. However, your child's current provider will need to provide a physician to physician consultation for the patient being referred.

The referral process – requesting and receiving medical records and obtaining insurance approvals – can sometimes take weeks, and a contract for services is required before a patient can be evaluated at the transplant center. Our Referral Specialist works diligently to ensure that contact is made within 24 hours of receiving the referral.
