As one of the leading pediatric
cardiologists in the
United States, Dr. Jeffrey Towbin’s clinical focus is on
diagnostic and therapeutic advances for cardiomyopathy,
transplant care and clinical cardiac genetics.
His accomplishments earned him the 2007 Distinguished Scientist
Award (Basic) given by the American College of Cardiology. The
award recognizes "major contributions to the advancement of
scientific knowledge in the field of cardiovascular disease" and
is one of the highest forms of recognition in the field of
cardiology.
As a researcher, Towbin’s internationally recognized laboratory
is heavily funded by the National Institutes of Health. His
research has provided new information about genes responsible
for congenital heart disease, cardiomyopathies, arrhythmias, and
sudden cardiac death. His work has resulted in several
diagnostic tests and therapies for both children and adults with
congenital heart diseases.
A transplant himself to Texas, Towbin hails initially from
Brooklyn, New York but moved to Cincinnati, Ohio to attend
college. He earned his Bachelor of Science, Master’s of Science
and medical degree at the University of Cincinnati. Following
his pediatric internship and residency at Children’s Hospital
Medical Center in Cincinnati, he
obtained his pediatric cardiology training in Houston at Texas
Children’s. He has been a member of the
Baylor College of
Medicine faculty since 1989.
Towbin holds several positions within Texas Children's including
chief of Cardiology, co-director of the Cardiovascular Genetics
Clinic and director of the Phoebe Willingham Muzzy Pediatric
Molecular Cardiology Laboratory. He is also professor of
Pediatrics, Cardiovascular Sciences and Molecular and Human
Genetics at Baylor College of Medicine, medical director for the
John Welsh Cardiovascular Diagnostic Laboratory and medical
director of the Pediatric Cardiomyopathy and Heart Failure
Service at Texas Children’s Hospital, Baylor College of
Medicine, St. Luke’s Episcopal Hospital and the Texas Heart
Institute. Towbin also holds the Texas Children’s Hospital
Foundation
Chair in Cardiac Research.
Texas Children’s Heart Center and Towbin’s team are respected as
the leaders in the treatment of pediatric cardiomyopathy in the
United States.
“With our extensive expertise, we see a large number of children
with cardiomyopathy at the Heart Center. These children are
referred to us not only from the greater Houston area but also
from all around the world,” said Towbin. “Our genetic research, cardiomyopathy, transplant, and
cardiac genetics clinics and services are leading the
way in treatment for pediatric patients with this heart muscle disease.”
