Texas Children’s Hospital is the primary pediatric teaching hospital for Baylor College of Medicine (BCM). The affiliation between the institutions extends throughout Texas Children’s operations, and Baylor faculty serve as chiefs of service, medical directors and staff physicians across the hospital’s 40+ subspecialty care offerings. Most importantly, this relationship allows Texas Children’s to offer the community the widest spectrum of pediatric specialty care, including many services that are not available anywhere else in Houston or the state of Texas.
Together, Texas Children’s and BCM also form one of the largest and most highly regarded pediatric training programs in the country, ranked number 5 nationally by U.S. News & World Report. Over the last 30 years, Texas Children’s and Baylor have trained a large portion of the pediatric physicians currently practicing in Harris County, providing our community with an asset of immeasurable value. As changing health policy extends coverage to families and children who are now uninsured, demand for physician services will only increase in a state that even now has a low pediatrician-to-patient ratio (under 50 pediatricians per 100,000 children under 18, versus over 65 nationally) making Texas Children’s investment in educating tomorrow’s doctors even more critical.
