The Bone Marrow Transplant Unit (BMTU) is a 14-bed unit located on the 8th floor of Texas Children Hospital - West tower. Adjacent to the inpatient unit is the BMT outpatient clinic.
The resident is expected to participate in the management of drug therapy for his/her patients.
To fulfill this responsibility, it is expected that resident build upon his/her understanding
of the stem cell transplant patient and complications associated with the patient’s course.
The resident is expected to:
- Effectively collect and organize pertinent patient specific information needed to evaluate the patient’s clinical course and drug therapy.
- Understand the pathophysiology and pharmacotherapy for complications seen in the SCT patient.
- Recognize medication related problems
- Develop a plan to resolve or manage the problems.
- Effectively communicate the plan to the multidisciplinary team.
Review of patients and/or topic discussion will occur on a daily basis with the preceptor.
A calendar on the topics to be discussed will be provided at the beginning of the rotation.
The resident is expected to come prepared for the meeting.
By the third week of the rotation, it is generally expected that the resident act independently.
He/She will be acting as the BMT Clinical Pharmacy Specialist. The preceptor will not attend patient
rounds at this point. However, it is expected that the resident meet with preceptor each morning
before the multidisciplinary rounds to review any necessary interventions.
Rounds: Multidisciplinary round occurs daily at 10:30 AM.
Required Meetings: BMT’s “Tumor Board” occurs every Tuesday
at 1:45 pm on the first floor of the Feigin Center.
