BREASTFEEDING BASICS

Taking the guesswork out of breastfeeding

Breastfeeding may seem challenging, especially if you are a new mother. But the benefits of health and bonding far outweigh the challenges. With the right information and support, a little patience and a lot of love, Texas Children's believes women can meet their breastfeeding goals. And our team of experienced lactation consultants are here to help with guidance, accurate and reliable information and support.

Prepare before your baby is born
Before your baby is even born, here are a few things you can do to help prepare yourself for breastfeeding:

  • Read books and magazines about breastfeeding.

  • Visit Web sites related to breastfeeding.

  • Locate and possibly meet with a lactation consultant. They are specially trained in supporting breastfeeding mothers and helping them work out any challenges.

  • Choose an OB/GYN and pediatrician who are breastfeeding-friendly.

  • Be sure the hospital where you’ll deliver has lactation consultants and a milk bank.

  • Take a class or join a support group.

  • Get things organized at home.

Visit The First Few Weeks for more information on breastfeeding once your child arrives.
