How can I arrange a transport by Kangaroo Crew?
To request transport of a patient to Texas Children's Hospital, call:

What is Kangaroo Crew?
Kangaroo Crew is a specialized pediatric intensive care transport service that efficiently and safely brings critically ill babies and children to Texas Children's Hospital.
 
What happens when I call Kangaroo Crew?
When you call Kangaroo Crew:
  • A trained communications specialist asks questions on a recorded line to acquire basic patient information.
  • The transport nurse obtains clinical information and immediately consults the appropriate medical command physician about the case.
  • The staff begins formulating a plan of care.
  • Appropriate pediatric subspecialists are contacted.
  • Simultaneously, the team gathers supplies and special equipment.
  • In transit, the transport team talks to the caregiver and gives special instructions.
What information do I need to have ready?
On the initial call, the communications specialist will ask for a brief patient history and patient location.

When Kangaroo Crew arrives to complete the transfer, please supply the team with a copy of the patient's medical record, a copy of the X-rays, a physician order stating "Transfer patient to Texas Children's Hospital by Kangaroo Crew," and a signed Memorandum of Transfer (M.O.T.).

How will Texas Children's follow up with the referring physician?
Within 24 hours of admission to Texas Children's Hospital, a neonatal nurse practitioner will call the referring physician or nurse with a medical status update.

During the course of the patient’s stay at Texas Children's, attending physicians will follow up with referring physicians regarding the baby or child’s medical status.

Who can request a Kangaroo Crew transfer?
Only a physician can access a transfer of a patient on Kangaroo Crew.

Can a family member accompany the baby during transfer?
Yes. A parent is always welcome to travel to Texas Children's with the patient.

What staff members are on the transport?
Each transport includes a specially trained neonatal/pediatric transport nurse and a specially trained neonatal/pediatric transport respiratory therapist. If needed, a neonatal nurse practitioner, a neonatalogist or a pediatric critical care physician will accompany the team.
