About our Neuroblastoma Program

Welcome to the first issue of the Texas Children’s Cancer Center Clinical Trials e-Newsletter. This e-Newsletter highlights ongoing studies for neuroblastoma and is designed to provide you with information regarding the latest clinical trials available at Texas Children's Cancer Center.

Neuroblastoma, one of the most aggressive pediatric malignancies, is a major therapeutic challenge. Texas Children’s Cancer Center offers comprehensive treatment for newly-diagnosed patients or neuroblastoma patients with relapsed disease. Listed below are a few of our available clinical studies for patients with newly-diagnosed or relapsed neuroblastoma.

IN THE NEWS

Immunotherapy:

Texas Children’s Cancer Center now offers a novel immunotherapy approach for newly-diagnosed patients. This trial was developed from findings of an earlier trial which demonstrated a patients’ ability to enhance their own immune response against neuroblastoma with a targeted vaccine administered in conjunction with chemotherapy and autologous stem cell transplant.
CheSat: Immunization with Lymphotactin and Interleukin-2 Gene Modified Neuroblastoma Tumor Cells after High-Dose Chemotherapy and Autologous Stem Cell Rescue in Patients with High-Risk Neuroblastoma

Chemotherapy:

A novel chemotherapy trial is available at Texas Children’s Cancer Center for children with newly-diagnosed, high-risk neuroblastoma. This protocol studies a novel technique for delivering chemotherapy called “chemo-switching” in an effort to enhance the antiangiogenic effects of chemotherapy and prevent tumor regrowth.
PEPI: Protracted Etoposide in a Phase II Upfront Window for Induction Therapy for High-Risk Neuroblastoma

Information from preclinical studies demonstrates efficacy of a new microtubulin inhibitor, ABT-751, in neuroblastoma. This novel drug is given orally for seven days, every three weeks. The goal of this COG study is to determine the effectiveness of ABT-751 in children with neuroblastoma.
ANBL0621: A Phase II Study of ABT-751, an Orally Bioavailable Tubulin Binding Agent, in Children With Recurrent or Refractory Neuroblastoma

At Texas Children’s Cancer Center we are determining the optimal dose of Karenitecin, a member of a novel class of camptothecins, in combination with other active agents in the treatment of neuroblastoma and other solid tumors and brain tumors. This study is only available at Texas Children’s Cancer Center.
A Phase I Trial of Escalating Doses of Karenitecin Plus Cyclophosphamide Administered Intravenously Daily for 5 Consecutive Days in Pediatric Patients with Refractory or Recurrent Solid Tumors

Texas Children’s Cancer Center is also involved in a COG Phase II clinical trial of Pemetrexed, a new anti-folate chemotherapy.
ADVL0525: A Phase II Study of Premetrexed in Children with Recurrent Malignancies

A major goal of the Neuroblastoma Program at Texas Children’s Cancer Center is to improve the survival rate of children with neuroblastoma while minimizing the toxicities associated with treatment. Texas Children’s Cancer Center, a joint center of Texas Children’s Hospital and Baylor College of Medicine, is dedicated to providing state-of-the-art comprehensive clinical care for children with neuroblastoma through the integration of laboratory and clinical research. Our approach is to combine cutting-edge molecular research with pre-clinical modeling and translational efforts to rapidly develop novel approaches to treating neuroblastoma. Our aim is to develop and provide cutting-edge therapies for children with this disease that offer a real promise of hope.
