Why did you choose TCH as an employer?  I was fortunate enough to do my speech and language externship at The Rise School of Houston, which is affiliated with the hospital, and decided early on my dream would be to work at TCH. I’ve always enjoyed working with children, but the atmosphere with its bright and cheery décor and caring professionals made me realize this environment was unlike any others.

What surprised you the most about TCH when you first started?  I knew the hospital was committed to being the best and was ahead of the field in terms of research and new strategies, but I was pleasantly surprised by how supportive the managers were in terms of continuing education. My team and I have always been encouraged to seek further knowledge in our areas of expertise. After conferences or training sessions, we are encouraged to come back and share what we have learned with the rest of the team members.

What does it take to be part of the TCH team?   It takes open mindedness and flexibility. The Bridges Program is a program I’ve worked for from its very beginning. Team members have always been encouraged to stay flexible and open as we implement various changes to better our program. It is these changes that has allowed us to get better and better at working so closely and providing support to our clients and their families.

In what ways has working here inspired you to be better?
My colleagues, the children, and their families all inspire me to be better. I am surrounded by a number of professionals from different disciplines that are all very dedicated and passionate about what they do. At Texas Children’s Hospital, the children and their families are the top priority and professionals go above and beyond to help them feel safe and supported as they work to meet their discipline specific goals.

Who or what about TCH keeps you motivated?   I am motivated because I know the entire hospital is dedicated to being the best place for not only the patients and their families, but also their employees. It does not matter where you are in the hospital, you are sure to meet professionals who are kind, considerate, knowledgeable and professional. My husband and I have had to take our son to TCH on a couple of occasions and I always leave feeling proud and knowing the TCH staff members have done all they can to answer our questions and make our family feel comfortable and safe.

How have your team members encouraged you to grow?
At Bridges, we are all learning to follow and implement the DIR model within our different professions such as speech and language, occupational therapy and physical therapy. The program supports each professional to achieve a highly desired DIR certification by providing time, consultations, coaching and payment for the certification process. We are encouraged to grow and learn by sharing information and strategies among one another. For example, if I have a speech session, I can often consult with another professional to figure what is the best positioning or what types of activities will bring the child to the optimum level of arousal in order to work.

If you could tell a potential employee one thing about working here, what would that be?  You will be given many opportunities to explore and learn more about various fields, different techniques and current research. You will also be surrounded by a multidisciplinary team that is at your fingertips whenever you need them.
