A central line catheter is a small plastic tube placed into a larger blood vessel. This catheter is used to deliver fluids and medications, and to draw blood tests. When bacteria enter the bloodstream through this catheter the result is a central line infection (which can lead to a bloodstream infection or BSI) and an ill child. Texas Children's Cancer and Hematology Centers are participating in a national effort to reduce the occurrence of central line infections. Research has shown that consistently using protocols for maintaining and caring for central lines can decrease the number of infections. Our measures reflect overall rate of Catheter Associated BSI in our Bone Marrow Transplant Inpatient Unit.

Seriously ill children, who spend a lot of time in bed, and cannot move easily, are at risk to develop open sores known as pressure ulcers. The Bone Marrow Transplant Inpatient Unit (8WT) nursing staff implements many actions to prevent pressure ulcers. Our measure reflects a periodic review of all patients in 8WT to determine the number of patients who have serious pressure ulcers.

Children with cancer often develop fever during chemotherapy treatment. The Texas Children's Cancer Center created an Urgent Care Bay within the clinic to see patients with fever that would otherwise require an emergency center visit. It is important for children with low white blood cell counts (neutropenia) with fever to receive antibiotic within 60 minutes of arrival to the Urgent Care Bay. The goal is for 100% of our cancer patients with fever and neutropenia to receive antibiotics within an hour after arrival to the Urgent Care Bay.
